National Equipment Register

Rebel Rents Shares National Equipment Register (NER) Success Story

December 2005 - Rebel Rents recently posted the following success story on their website and asked NER to share it with other equipment owners:

Rebel Rents Senior Manager, Doug Fleury was contacted by a detective with the California Highway Patrol, who was following up a lead on a suspected piece of stolen equipment.

The detective had run the serial number through the National Equipment Register’s database of stolen equipment and found that it matched to a John Deere 310SG registered with NER by Rebel Rents. The equipment was reported stolen many months ago off one of our customer’s jobsites. At that time, a police report was taken and the theft was registered with the NER.

NER provided our contact information and the detective called us directly to let us know our equipment had been recovered. Without the equipment being registered, we may have not been notified immediately, allowing us to get the equipment back without costly impound fees. Or, we may not have gotten it back at all.

We wanted to say thank you to the NER for their assistance. We certainly recommend their service and believe it to be a valuable tool.

Business Spotlight of the Month / Economic Development SpecialistSpeech by Randy Williams, Economic Development Senior SpecialistCity of San Jacinto

Good evening Council. I am pleased to present Rebel Rents as our Business Spotlight for August 2005. Founded in 1995, the Company has grown from a single store in Riverside County to 10 stores in 3 counties – Riverside, Orange and San Diego – and relocated to San Jacinto from Hemet in May, 2005. Today it has 120 employees, a rental equipment inventory in excess of 30 million and its annual revenues ranks 69th nationwide out of thousands of rental companies. It is headquartered in Temecula and is the largest independent rental company in Southern California. They looked for an opportunity to expand and relocate their Hemet store on State Street. They chose the City of San Jacinto and a location near the intersection of Esplanade and Santa Fe due to the growing market and San Jacinto’s proximity to their customers. The San Jacinto store had the largest grand opening of any store. Rebel Rents catered a meal to over 300 people who came to welcome them to the community. The store has exceeded their expectations. The new store is on an acre and a half, has a 10,000 square foot building, and employs up to 10 full-time employees.

Doug Fleury, their Marketing Manager, has been an integral part of their success. He is with us tonight and I would like to invite him to the stand.Rebel offers the public the opportunity to rent an item as small as a drill and as large as a Skip Loader. They rent lawnmowers to large construction equipment, along with specialized equipment such as a rock splitter that no one else rents. They made national headlines when a major home builder built a large residential track near a hill that had boulders as large as buses. A geological inspector informed them the boulders would need to be removed but the problem was the homes were already framed and getting equipment in let alone removing a bus sized boulder was impossible. The developer could not find a company to solve the matter till he hooked up with Rebel Rents and their rock splitter.

As of last weekend, I can attest to the value of Rebel Rents. I needed a trailer to haul some large items and called open a rental company in Temecula I used in the past. They had the right size trailer and made a reservation. I drove my Van towing a personal trailer there with some items I would then need to transfer to the new trailer. When I arrived I asked if I could leave my personal trailer there till I returned and the employee called his supervisor to get permission. I was told due to past experiences the supervisor declined. The employee who made my reservation then noticed I was driving a van. He said the trailer he reserved for me, per company policy, can only be towed by a truck. I said it would have been nice to have known that before I came here. Instead of an apology the person responded by saying why trucks were better than vans. I left but was fortunate that there was a Rebel Rents nearby. The Rebel employee who greeted me had never seen me before and I did nothing to revel to him that I was interviewing their executives or going to spotlight the company. He reviewed the van, engine, towing assembly, asked what I was hauling, where, etc. and said the van will work. Then, observing I was towing a personal trailer said “Would you like to leave your trailer here till you return?” That would be a big help I said. The service did not end there. He said my towing assembly might work better if it was reconfigured. This would not only help with the Rebel trailer but any trailer I towed in the future. I agreed. They took parts of the package back to their work shop and reconfigured it. I was on the road in about the same time the other company took to inform me I could not utilize their services and why.

Rebel Rents can expect to have me back and I suspect that is why so many others are using their services. And for their success and contributions to our community, we are pleased to spotlight them for August 2005.

ARA Roundtable Session 8-18-05

August 18, 2005

Doug Fleury
Rebel Rents
4218 Winchester Road
Temecula, CA 92590

Dear Doug:

This letter references the conversation ARA has had with you regarding how the rental industry can develop future service technicians. It also serves as confirmation for your participation at the Roundtable session.

As you are aware, the rental industry continues to find it challenging to have available and hire adequate numbers of qualified service technicians. These positions are represented by a broad range of service personnel, including mechanics skilled in all technical disciplines of heavy equipment, truck technology and engine repair.

While other industries or individual manufacturers have worked to develop relationships and programs with technical schools or community colleges to benefit them respectively, there is no such avenue for the rental industry. The ARA is the logical organization to address this issue for the rental industry and to facilitate a solution for members of all size rental businesses.

In that regard, ARA will be sponsoring a Roundtable session with a representative group of rental company members that carry a construction/general tool inventory. The purpose of the Roundtable is to give more complete definition to the issue and to define possible steps to achieving a solution.

ARA is inviting three national company members, three mid-size regional members and three members with anywhere from one to ten independent rental stores to attend and participate in the Roundtable. All members who attend reflect an interest in this issue and can discuss all facets of how the industry can best address the issue from their viewpoint. ARA staff will facilitate the discussion. Carla Brozick, ARA’s director of education and training will be spearheading this project for the association and, if she hasn’t already, will be in contact with you prior to the meeting.

The agenda will be defined from talking with confirmed Roundtable participants and other rental members, in addition to ARA staff researching the issue to provide background information prior to and during the discussion. It is hoped the discussion will define a clear path on necessary steps to positively address and provide optimum solutions to this critical issue for the membership and industry. Following this initial session, ARA staff members will rely on attendees for some degree of feedback as the project starts to take shape.

The ARA will hold the Roundtable in the Chicago O’Hare airport area, for ease in attendance by all participants, at the Doubletree Hotel in Rosemont. We are asking participants to arrive the evening of Tuesday, September 13, and to meet from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 14. If your arrival is in time on Tuesday evening, we invite you to attend an informal dinner at 6:30 p.m. at Gibsons Steakhouse, which is connected to the Doubletree Hotel.

This will be an ARA-sponsored function, to include meeting coordination, agenda preparation and facilitation, payment of the Roundtable facility fees and meals, as well as handling travel and housing expenses for the participants.

ARA looks forward to your participation and a fruitful discussion. Thank you for accepting the challenge to address this industry issue with ARA.

Sincerely,

Christine L. Wehrman
Chief Executive Officer
